Title: Create a Solar Print Using the Sun: 1-6 students

Date: Flexible: contact me at kadiesalfi@gmail.com

Time: 2ish hours

Cost: $125 per person

Location: Little Compton, RI in my art studio

Description:
In this workshop, we will create a blueprint using the sun, also known as a solar print or cyanotype print. This non-toxic, alternative photo process uses sunlight (or an exposing unit) to produce rich cyan-indigo blue prints. It's a beautiful and simple way to capture the natural world through light and shadow.

I will provide a variety of items for you to use to block out the sunlight, leaving behind the silhouettes of these objects as the final image. You’re also welcome to bring your own items from home that can be used to make contact prints or photograms. Flowers and plant cuttings are especially beautiful for creating intricate silhouettes, but feel free to get creative—buttons, feathers, lace, shells, or anything that can block out light and form a unique pattern will work wonderfully.

Level: Beginner, 14 and up

What to bring: Clothes that can get dirty.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to create a cyanotype print (solar print) using sunlight
  • Techniques for collecting natural materials to incorporate into your artwork
  • How to connect with and pay attention to the beauty of the world around you, making it a part of your creative process.

What you will go home with: One 8" x 10" print and four 4" x 5" prints.
