Level: Beginner, 14 and up

 

Description:

Learn how to create an 8" x 10" drypoint print (image size 4" x 6") using an etching needle. This workshop covers drawing, inking, wiping a zinc plate, and printing through an etching press. Perfect for beginners or anyone looking to get back into etching!

 

Drypoint is a printmaking process in which a design is drawn on a zinc plate with a sharp, pointed needle-like instrument, that scrapes away the metal. Ink is then applied to the plate and wiped off leaving ink in the lines that were scraped away. The plate is put through an etching press and the image is transferred onto paper.

 

Additional Details:

-Wear clothes that can get dirty.

-Bring sketches or ideas.

 

What you will learn: The basics of drypoint printmaking, how to draw on a plate, ink, wipe and print a plate, prepare paper and how to use an etching press. You must be comfortable getting your hands dirty, we will be hand wiping our zinc plates.

 

What you will go home with: One 4" x 6" zinc plate, four 8" x 10" prints of the same image (image size is 4" x 6"), knowledge, joy and a happy belly.

 

Food: I will have food to nosh on, sparkling water and juice.

 

Instructor: Kadie Salfi
Born in Burlington, Vermont in 1972, Kadie Salfi studied Printmaking, Photography, and Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She also spent two years at Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles, where she worked on printing editions of original graphics for contemporary masters such as Rauschenberg, Celmins, Serra, and Johns. With over 25 years of teaching experience, Kadie brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep passion for the creative process to her workshops.

 

Salfi has taught a wide range of printmaking and artistic techniques, including drypoint, etching, photo etching, intro to screen printing, photo screen printing, cyanotype, drawing, and more. She has shared her expertise at Cornell University and The Ink Shop in Ithaca, NY, Saint Michael's College in Vermont, San Francisco Waldorf High School, as well as from her various studios over the past twenty-five years.

 

Salfi now maintains a dedicated studio practice in Little Compton, RI, and has exhibited her work in solo shows across both coasts, including A.I.R. Gallery (Brooklyn), Cornell University and Corners Gallery (Ithaca, NY), Arnot Art Museum, Elmira, NY, Mark Wolfe Contemporary Art (San Francisco), and BCA Center (Burlington, VT). Her work has been featured in the eCORNELL Keynote Series, Of Note Magazine, City Limits, Out of Bounds Radio, The Cornell Daily Sun, Chapter89 Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and Artscope.

 

Canceled bookings: will receive a full refund (minus Paypal/bank processing fees) if cancellation is notified within 8 days of the workshop date.

 

Any cancellations 3 to 7 days before the workshop date will forfeit 50% of the cost of the workshop as well as the cost of Paypal processing/refund fees.

 

2 days notice and under will forfeit the whole cost of the workshop.

 

Every effort will be made to ensure you can be accommodated at another workshop date if you are unable to attend your booked date and notify us within 8 days of the booked workshop date.
